Cartomancy and Relativity

Why nailing down timing is so darned hard

We’ve all been there. Your spread has given you some really great insight, but the one thing it lacks is when this all happens. Most of the time, it doesn’t matter so much; things just kind of happen when they happen, right? But there are some things — you know those things — you simply need to know yesterday. From my experience, that question has something to do with when a soulmate is coming into the picture, or when the job offer is going to appear. Not to say these are trivial matters, but these matters are often the ones with the most urgency. Sometimes, the timing is pretty clear, sometimes, and I would say most of the time, it’s not. Why is that?

Although this seems like a cruel joke, I believe I have a reasonable explanation for this, and it’s based on the Theory of Relativity. My take on oracles, whether they be cards, runes, tea leaves, pendulums, or whatever you have at your disposal, is that they are simply tools that measure energy. Whatever you attribute this energy to, whether it be Source, Spirit Guides, Higher Self, The Universe, or something else entirely, to me is irrelevant in how the oracles fundamentally work; the point is that this energy is measurable. If we assume the energy we measure with our oracles is approaching the speed of light (now we’re really delving into my past), and this energy has mass, things get a little wonky. When particles approach the speed of light, they experience what’s called time dilation; they experience time differently than an observer would. In Einstein’s Twin Paradox, the twin who travels in his spaceship approaching the speed of light experiences time passing more slowly relative to his twin observer. When particles travel at the speed of light, one could theorize that time would stop, as at this speed, all motion would exist in space outside of time, assuming E=mc², making time sort of irrelevant.

The point is, what does time mean to a group of particles, or being, that exists only in space? Well, not a whole lot. Imagine asking the average American to tell you today’s weather in degrees Celsius. It’s a system they’re aware of, but not too terribly familiar with, so the guesses may vary widely, and some may be more accurate than others. This is not to dis on Americans by the way, as I am certainly among that population!

So, that’s my take on what’s happening here, and it’s a handicap, to be sure. However, there are ways we can try and work around this. If you’re looking for a way to get a little more accuracy on timing, try some of these suggestions:

  • Frame your question — This doesn’t always work as well as we might like, but it definitely gets the “ballpark” a little closer. When asking your question, try phrasing it something like, “What is happening within the next __(insert time frame here)__.”

  • Use time markers based on seasons, moon phases, or astronomical/astrological events

  • Ask about events leading up to what you’re anticipating

  • Take particular notice of cards in your deck that are associated with time, such as The Moon, the Eight of Wands, The Crossroads, or the Clover, for instance.

But rather than forcing the issue, consider that if the timing isn’t clear, perhaps there is good reason for that. Remember that first and foremost, oracles like the Tarot or Lenormand are here to help you align yourself with your highest good, not necessarily “predict the future,” although they sometimes can. Perhaps the timing isn’t clear because you need to first learn a life lesson, or complete something, or accept and process something that’s recently happened. Perhaps the other party in your query needs to do some work as well. The bottom line is that everybody has free will, and the more moving parts there are in a machine, the greater the likelihood there will be complications along the way.

My advice is to trust in the Divine timing, and that things will unfold when they are needed to. On observing the snow fall here recently, I noted how differently it falls from rain. Both are water, but under different conditions, it behaves so differently. It’s much the same with what life throws at you; the circumstances make a difference. The snow lends some good perspective here: Take in the journey as much as you’re able to. There’s no need to rush all the time.
